Goran Vi\u0161nji\u0107<\/strong> (Croatian: [\u0261\u01d2ran \u028b\u00ee\u0283\u0272it\u0255]<\/a>; born 9 September 1972) is a Croatian-American actor who has appeared in American and British films and television productions. He is best known in the United States<\/a> for his roles as Dr. Luka Kova\u010d<\/a> in ER<\/a><\/em> and Garcia Flynn in Timeless<\/a><\/em>, both NBC<\/a> television series. For ER<\/em>, he and the cast were nominated for two Screen Actors Guild Awards<\/a>. He is the son-in-law of Croatian film director and former head of Croatian Radiotelevision<\/a>(1991\u201395), Antun Vrdoljak<\/a>.He moved to the United States in the late 1990s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vi\u0161nji\u0107 was the youngest actor to be chosen for the title role in Shakespeare<\/a>‘s Hamlet<\/a><\/em> at the Dubrovnik<\/a> Summer Theatre Festival. Originally cast as Laertes<\/a>and understudy to Hamlet<\/a>, he took over the role when the star dropped out of the production shortly before the first performance. He portrayed the doomed prince from 1994 to 2000, winning several Orlando Awards (the equivalent of the Tony Award<\/a>).[7]<\/a><\/sup> During an episode of ER<\/a><\/em>, he demonstrated his expertise in the part of Hamlet, by reciting an excerpt from the “To be, or not to be<\/a>” soliloquy<\/a> in Croatian<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prior to ER<\/em>, he found work in local TV productions and landed a Tuborg<\/a> beer commercial that aired in Europe<\/a>.[10]<\/a><\/sup> Vi\u0161nji\u0107 also had small speaking roles in films such as The Peacemaker<\/a><\/em>, Committed<\/a><\/em> and Practical Magic<\/a><\/em>. In 1998, he appeared in Madonna<\/a>‘s music video “The Power of Good-Bye<\/a>“, and had a cameo<\/a> in the movie Rounders<\/a><\/em>. It was his role as Risto, the Bosnian<\/a> driver in Welcome to Sarajevo<\/a><\/em> that led then-producer John Wells to offer him a role as a doctor to replace the departing George Clooney<\/a> in the sixth season of ER<\/em><\/a> in late 1999, eventually becoming the show’s male lead by the start of season 12<\/a>, having taken over from the departing star Noah Wyle<\/a>, who left after the finale of season 11<\/a>. By season 14<\/a>, however, he was only making a limited number of appearances, before completely leaving the show early in season 15<\/a> (15×03: “The Book of Abby”).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While starring on ER<\/em>, Vi\u0161nji\u0107 worked on other projects. He starred in the British film Doctor Sleep<\/a><\/em> (2002), alongside Shirley Henderson<\/a> and Miranda Otto<\/a>. He co-starred in The Deep End<\/a><\/em>; voiced Soto in Ice Age<\/a><\/em>, and starred in The Last Will<\/a><\/em> and Doctor Sleep<\/em>. In 2004, he starred in the television miniseries<\/a> Spartacus<\/a><\/em> and the Croatian movie and television series Long Dark Night<\/a><\/em>. He appeared with Jennifer Garner<\/a> in Elektra<\/a><\/em> (2005). In 2005, Vi\u0161nji\u0107 was one of four finalists for the role of James Bond<\/a>,[11]<\/a><\/sup> eventually losing out to British actor Daniel Craig<\/a>, with whom he would appear in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2008, Vi\u0161nji\u0107 starred in the film Helen<\/a><\/em>, alongside Ashley Judd<\/a> as Judd’s character’s husband David in the drama, which made its world premiere at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He appeared alongside Carla Gugino<\/a> in a segment of the 2009 film New York, I Love You<\/a><\/em>, an anthology set in New York. Vi\u0161nji\u0107’s segment was directed by Andrey Zvyagintsev<\/a>. The segment was cut from the theatrical release of the film but was included in the DVD version.[citation needed<\/a><\/em>]<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vi\u0161nji\u0107 appeared in the historical drama The Courageous Heart of Irena Sendler<\/a><\/em>, about a young Polish<\/a> woman who saved the lives of many Jewish<\/a>children in wartime Warsaw<\/a>, filmed in Riga<\/a>, Latvia<\/a>. It was produced for Hallmark Hall of Fame<\/a><\/em> and aired on CBS<\/a> on 19 April 2009. He completed a role in Mike Mills<\/a>‘ independent film, Beginners<\/a><\/em>. In late 2009, he was cast as Samson in the miniseries The Deep<\/a><\/em>, shown on BBC One<\/a> in 2010.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He appeared as Andrija Hebrang<\/a> in the historical drama Tito<\/a><\/em> on Croatian television. He later appeared in the unsold 2010 pilot of ABC<\/a>‘s Boston’s Finest<\/em>, playing a disgraced cop who works with a female officer to solve crimes while trying to clear his name. In 2011, he appeared in the two-episode season three finale of the television series Leverage<\/em><\/a>, as international crime financier Damien Moreau, his first guest appearance on an English-language television program. In 2011, he played Dragan Armansky, the head of a security agency, in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo<\/a><\/em> and he has signed on to play this role for the entire film trilogy produced and distributed by Sony Pictures Entertainment<\/a>.[19]<\/a><\/sup> He was featured on a four-episode arc of the American television series Pan Am<\/a><\/em>; he played a Yugoslavian<\/a> attach\u00e9 to the United Nations<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2014, Goran played John Woods, the husband of Molly Woods<\/a>, in Extant<\/a><\/em>, produced by Steven Spielberg<\/a>. Although the series was renewed in late 2014, Vi\u0161nji\u0107 left the series early in the second season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From 2016 to 2018, he played former NSA<\/a> asset Garcia Flynn in NBC<\/a>‘s time travel television series Timeless<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2019, Vi\u0161nji\u0107 portrayed Ante Gotovina<\/a> in the Antun Vrdoljak<\/a>-directed film General<\/em>. His performance, along with the film itself gained overwhelmingly negative reviews with many critics, including Milivoj Juki\u0107 and Jurica Pavi\u010di\u0107<\/a> calling his portrayal “the worst performance of his career”. The critically and commercially panned film was screened at the Pula Film Festival<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Visnjic played Nikola Tesla<\/a> in the twelfth series<\/a> of Doctor Who<\/a><\/em>, appearing in the fourth episode, “Nikola Tesla’s Night of Terror<\/a>“, first broadcast on 19 January 2020.
